Chapter 16
Governance Decay Checklist
Chapter 16 of Silent Spend explains how marketing governance does not fail all at once - it erodes. The warning signs are subtle individually, but together they form a recognisable pattern that precedes serious budget mismanagement.
Answer yes or no to each warning sign. Each yes represents a decay indicator that is currently present in your organisation.
Has more than six months passed since someone with budget authority reviewed your marketing spend against business results?
Are agency contracts renewed automatically, without a fresh performance review or competitive consideration?
Does marketing have sole authority to determine whether its own spend was effective?
Has the marketing budget grown year on year without a corresponding review of what it is producing?
Are there ongoing campaigns or channels that no one can directly link to a commercial outcome?
Do vendor relationships outlast the original staff who established them, with no requalification?
Has reporting from your agency become less detailed or less frequent over time?
Are challenges to marketing spend treated as attacks on the team rather than reasonable governance?
Is there no documented process for removing or reducing spend that is not working?
Could your agency describe your marketing strategy more accurately than your own leadership team?
Chapter 16 of Silent Spend explains how these patterns develop and what is required to reverse them.
